According to GeoSphere Austria, 157 of its 277 weather stations recorded new maximum temperatures for June. Additionally, 66 stations registered their highest temperatures ever recorded in any month. Vienna hit 40.0 degrees on June 28, and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg reached 40.1 degrees on the subsequent day. Several low-lying areas experienced 10 to 14 consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees.
The Wegener Center at the University of Graz estimated that the combined socioeconomic impacts from the June and late July heatwaves amount to approximately €1.4 billion. This preliminary figure accounts for health effects, productivity losses, agricultural damage, infrastructure stress, and increased cooling demands. It also considers ecosystem and public service impacts. The estimate does not constitute an official government valuation nor does it include insured losses, as insurance figures only reflect damages covered under active policies.
Heatwave intensity surpasses previous Austrian records
The Wegener Center evaluated these events through area-degree days, a metric that combines heat intensity, duration, and geographical extent. They calculated around 16,700 area-degree days for the June heatwave. Their analysis placed the late July event between 22,700 and 25,000. Austria’s former record was set during a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which accumulated approximately 22,100 area-degree days below 1,500 meters elevation.
The extreme temperatures during this period also coincided with a notable rise in heat-related fatalities. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety estimated that 395 deaths in June 2026 were linked to heat. This figure marks the highest June total since the agency began monitoring this metric. Heat-related mortality reflects deaths occurring above expected levels during unusually hot periods. It does not necessarily mean heat was listed as the sole cause of death on certificates.
Rainfall shortages intensify drought conditions nationwide
Austria endured the heatwave after experiencing several months of notably dry weather. From January 1 to July 27, total rainfall across the country was approximately 426 millimeters, compared to a long-term average of 609 millimeters for that period, representing nearly a 30% deficit. Authorities have described the first seven months of 2026 as the driest comparable period since records began in the early 1900s. Regions such as Lower Austria, Vienna, and northern Burgenland reported some of the country’s largest rainfall deficits.
Persistent high-pressure systems, intense sunlight, and limited precipitation contributed to increased evaporation during late spring and summer. These conditions led to reduced soil moisture, stressing crops, rivers, forests, and water supplies. Climate data indicates that heatwaves have become more frequent, prolonged, and severe over recent decades. Between the 1980s and the 2020s, average maximum temperatures during heatwaves have risen by about three degrees. The newly established July record further underscores Austria’s trend of rising extreme heat events.
