MOSCOW / RankWire.AI / – The Russian Ministry of Economic Development announced that the country welcomed 2.5 million international tourists during the initial six months of 2026, representing a 20.1% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. China continued to be Russia’s leading source market, contributing over 22% of all foreign visitors. These latest statistics highlight a steady expansion in Russia’s inbound tourism sector from January through June. Nikita Kondratiev, a senior official at the Russian Ministry of Economic Development, shared these tourism insights during meetings held in Shenyang, China.

The figures are based on official tourism statistics that track foreign visitors staying at collective accommodation facilities across Russia. Rosstat data also revealed that Russians undertook 43.2 million domestic trips in the first half of 2026, marking a 4.3% growth compared to the same period in 2025. While inbound tourism experienced a faster growth rate annually than domestic travel during this time, each category was measured independently using separate official metrics.
China maintained its position as the largest source of foreign visitors to Russia during the period. Other key markets included travelers from Persian Gulf nations, Turkey, and India. Tourism extended beyond the major cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg to destinations such as Murmansk, Vladivostok, and Kazan. Russian authorities also reported direct international flights connecting with 34 destinations, including multiple countries across Asia and the Middle East.
China Continues to Lead Russia’s Tourist Arrival Market
The recent tourism data was unveiled during a Tourism Council session of the Greater Tumen Initiative in Shenyang. Attendees also participated in a seminar focused on inbound tourism in Northeast Asia, which included discussions on cross-border travel initiatives involving Russia, China, and Mongolia. One project under consideration is the development of the historic Great Tea Road tourism route, which has now entered the implementation phase and is expected to encompass roughly 20 Russian regions.
The Russian segment of the Great Tea Road will span from the Far East and Siberia through the Urals and Volga region, continuing toward Moscow and St. Petersburg. Other tourism initiatives discussed during the meetings involved connections between Blagoveshchensk and Heihe, as well as tourism growth around Vladivostok. Additional topics included the Trans-Siberian Railway, Lake Baikal, and scientific tourism linked to the Vostochny Cosmodrome.
Visa-Free Travel Agreements Broaden Between Russia and China
As tourist numbers rise, travel regulations between Russia and China have been modified. Russia extended its visa-free entry policy for eligible Chinese citizens until Dec. 31, 2027, while China did the same for Russian nationals. The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that ordinary Russian passport holders can visit without a visa for up to 30 days for tourism, business, family visits, exchanges, and transit purposes.
The first-half statistics align with a general upward trend in cross-border travel between the two nations. Chinese official figures indicate that 154,200 Chinese tourists traveled to Russia in the first quarter of 2026, a 44% increase year-on-year. During the same period, Russia ranked second among China’s sources of inbound visitors. These recent numbers establish China as the top foreign market for Russia’s international tourists, accounting for more than 20% of all recorded international arrivals.
