This framework permits approved microgenerators to connect via a standard UK plug and household socket. Eligible products are limited to an output of no more than 800 watts of alternating current. They must comply with Interim Product Specification version 2 and operate safely within the local distribution network. Devices such as plug-in batteries and those storing electricity imported from household circuits are excluded under these regulations.

The UK Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, just one day after ministers approved it. This amendment introduces a specific exception to existing restrictions on plugs used for generating equipment. Each plug must be verified by a notified body to meet the relevant BS 1363 standards. While product approval is applicable across the UK, the safety regulation amendment covers England, Wales, and Scotland.
The interim specification stipulates requirements for electrical design, mounting systems, fire safety, labelling, and consumer instructions. A technical study tested representative plug-in solar products on domestic wiring under controlled conditions, confirming stable operation and the absence of sustained unsafe energisation or unacceptable thermal effects. The study also identified differences in export controls, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality, providing data that shaped the UK-specific safety standards necessary for legal market entry.
Retailers prepare for approved plug-in products
The government conducted a consultation that received 466 responses from businesses, experts, regulators, and the public. Over 85% of participants supported the interim specification, with most also endorsing the plug-in amendment. Contributors included manufacturers, installers, network operators, electricians, academics, and consumer groups. Some respondents raised concerns about older household wiring, noncompliant online products, and the need for clear user instructions. Others urged authorities to differentiate plug-in solar panels from plug-in battery systems.
Retail chains such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl are actively preparing for the new category of products. This connection option is designed for households unable to install conventional rooftop systems, including some renters and residents with balconies or outdoor spaces. Systems utilizing this new plug-in method will not be legally operable before August 27. After that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect through a standard household socket.
